Why Assessment Tool Reviews Are Now Mandatory

Under the revised Standards for RTOs (2025), all Registered Training Organisations must review their assessment tools before use. This requirement applies not only to new tools but also to any existing tools that have not yet been reviewed against the updated standards. The purpose of this review is to ensure that every assessment tool aligns with the training product requirements, adheres to the principles of assessment, and meets the rules of evidence.

What Standard 1.3 Requires

Performance Indicator 2 of Outcome Standard 1.3 outlines the following expectations for RTOs:

• Assessment must be consistent with the requirements of the training product.
• Assessment tools must be reviewed before use to confirm they support assessments that are consistent with the principles of assessment and rules of evidence set out under Standard 1.4.
• Any review must result in updates or changes to assessment tools as necessary.

These updates reflect a broader shift across the Standards towards outcome-based compliance and continuous quality improvement.
